Coping Strategies

The "Save" Button

And Understanding Silent Signals

Today we will learn how to hack our brains to save ideas without crashing the class.

The "Now or Never" Feeling

Critical Thinking Debrief

  • Have you ever had an idea that felt like holding a Hot Potato?
  • Did you feel like if you didn't say it right now, you would explode or forget it?
The Science:

This is your Working Memory panic. Your brain thinks, "Dump this info out before it vanishes!"

The Manual Save

How to "Dump" Info Safely

When you type on a computer, you hit "Save" so you don't lose work.
We are installing a Save Button for your brain using Kinesthetic Redirection.

Option A: Invisible Ink

Use your index finger to "write" the keyword on your desk surface.

Option B: The Parking Lot

Write the keyword on your notecard

Why? Moving your finger tells your brain: "Data Saved."

Silent Signals

The "Air Scribble"

The Teacher's Role: I will not say "Stop." I will make a scribbling motion in the air.

The Student's Role:

  • It does NOT mean "You are in trouble."
  • It DOES mean "Your brain is overheating. Hit the Save Button."

The Save Drill

Let's Practice the Code

  1. Teacher starts reading.
  2. Student intentionally interrupts (Fake it!).
  3. Teacher gives the Silent Signal (Air Scribble).
  4. Student immediately uses Manual Save (Finger write on desk).

(Let's try 3 rounds!)

Exit Ticket

Check Your Understanding

1. True or False: If the teacher gives me the signal, it means I am in big trouble.

2. The Strategy: The signal means I should __________________ my idea so I don't forget it.

3. The Why: Why does "Invisible Ink" help the class?
